Tooth devitalisation and root canal therapy

Endodontics treats the dental pulp; that is, the living part of the tooth. In cases of deep tooth decay or following fracture, the damage can affect the tooth pulp, which requires endodontic treatment of the tooth. This consists in the removal of the dental nerve and the sealing of the channel using a cement. The warning signs are:

Strong sensitivity to hot/cold temperature;

Grayish color of the tooth.

Chewing pain with possible swelling of underlying tissues (throbbing tooth, feeling of higher tooth);

Endodontic treatment

The treatment consists of conscientious eradication of soft tissue from the pulp cavity, adequate disinfection of root canals and finally hermetic closure of the channels. In the case of partial previous therapies, it is possible to resume the root canal treatment and achieve complete healing of the tooth (canal recovery). However, it must be taken into account that the morphology of the root canal is very variable, and there may be numerous secondary accessory channels that often cannot be reached directly with dental instruments. This can lead in some cases to failure of the treatment. However, the surgical removal of the apex of the root (apicectomy) in most cases solves this problem.
